Santa Bear Pattern

The clock is ticking; only 22 days left for Christmas! The perfect time for some last minute projects and gifts. As part of the Advent Cal 2019 my Santa Bear is my last minute gift to you. So grab your holiday hooks and enjoy!


  • 2.5 mm hook (or US C/2)
  • fingering yarn in brown, black, red, white, beige (I used Scheepjes Catona)
  • a piece of gold yarn or thread
  • 8 mm safety eyes
  • stuffing
  • needle
  • scissors
  • stitch marker


R = Round
mr = magic ring
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
inc = increase
dec = decrease
hdc = half double crochet
FLO = front loops only



R1 With brown, sc 6 in a mr (6)
R2 [inc] x 6 (12)
R3 [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
R4 [sc 2, inc] x 6 (24)
R5 [sc 3, inc] x 6 (30)
R6 [sc 4, inc] x 6 (36) change color to black
R7 [sc 5, inc] x 6 (42)
R8 [sc 6, inc] x 6 (48) change color to brown
R9-16 sc around (48) 8 rounds
R17 [sc 6, dec] x 6 (42)
R18 [sc 5, dec] x 6 (36)
R19 [sc 4, dec] x 6 (30)

Place the eyes between R15 and R16 approximately 6 st apart. Start stuffing and keep stuffing as you go.

R20 [sc 3, dec] x 6 (24)
R21 [sc 2, dec] x 6 (18)
R22 [sc, dec] x 6 (12)
R23 [dec] x 6 (6).
FO and sew closed.


R1 With beige, sc 6 in a mr (6)
R2 [sc 3 in each of next 2 st, sc in next] x 2 (14)
FO leaving a long tail for sewing.

With black yarn embroider a “T” shape onto the muzzle.

Sew the muzzle onto the head on R11-14 below the eyes.

With black yarn embroider the eyebrows.

With gold yarn or thread embroider a square for the buckle on R6-7.

EARS (make 2)

R1 With brown, hdc 7 into a mr (7)
Tighten the mr but do not join to first hdc.
FO leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew them onto R15-17.


R1 With white, sc 6 in a mr (6)
R2 [inc] x 6 (12)
R3 sc around (12)
R4 [dec] x 6 (6) change color to red
R5 in FLO sc around (6)
R6 sc around (6)
R7 [sc 2, inc] x 2 (8)
R8 sc around (8)
R9 [sc 3, inc] x 2 (10)
R10 sc around (10)
R11 [sc 4, inc] x 2 (12)
R12 sc around (12)
R13 sc 6 in FLO, hdc 6 through both loops (12) (this should create the fold)
R14 [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
R15 sc around (18)
R16 [sc 2, inc] x 6 (24) change color to white
R17 sc around (24)
R18 sl st in each st around (24)
FO leaving a long tail for sewing.


Sew the hat onto the head between the ears with the 6 hdc of R13 in the front.
You don’t need to stuff the hat but you can add a small amount of stuffing in the bottom if you want to.

Fold the hat backwards and sew the top of the hat onto the head to make it stay in place.

Add a loop if you want to use your bear as a tree ornament.
